With the huge Opioid epidemic happening in the U.S, you’d think that the FDA would be leading the charge in the push for alternative medicine. However, they’re doing just the opposite of that. FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb recently announced a plan to “crackdown” on Homeopathic Drugs. Homeopathic is a fancy term for herbal treatments such as Chamomile Tea and Saint John’s Wort. You know, the treatments which many people find effective but don’t come with all the horrible side effects that prescription drugs have.
Statement from the FDA:
Gottlieb stated that “In recent years, we’ve seen a large uptick in products labeled as homeopathic that are being marketed for a wide array of diseases and conditions, from the common cold to cancer,” Gottlieb said in a statement. “In many cases, people may be placing their trust and money in therapies that may bring little to no benefit in combating serious ailments, or worse—that may cause significant and even irreparable harm because the products are poorly manufactured, or contain active ingredients that aren’t adequately tested or disclosed to patients”.
Sure there are a bunch of herbal treatments out there that may not work as well as advertised, but since when do we need the FDA to baby us on every decision we make. It sounds like they’re just trying to come up with excuses to easily squash out big pharma’s only competition. And if we’re talking about negative effects of medicine, why is it that every single drug commercial we see these days nonchalantly lists off crazy side effects like extreme headaches, vomiting, seizures, and death? Where’s the huge crackdown on these drugs? I’ve never heard of anyone having a seizure from drinking Chamomile Tea.
Around 600,000 people have already died from the opioid crisis, so why is the FDA wasting its time “cracking down” on natural remedies that are mostly harmless?
It’s most likely that big pharma is sick and tired of natural medicine cutting in on their profits, as homeopathic medicine is now a $3Billion growing industry. They’ve tried to shut down the sale of kava, kratom, and just about every other very effective herbal remedy that starts gaining a lot of hype.
What this could mean
It seems like America is slowly getting closer and closer to a communist-like form of government where the government controls and monitors almost every aspect of our lives. That way they can maximize profits and prevent any sort of change or revolt from easily happening. They can claim it’s a “Democracy” and that the people have control because we elect representatives, but how does that even matter if these representatives are all working for the same group of people.
There needs to be a fine line between what the government can control, and what they cannot control. That’s supposed to be the constitution and the bill of rights, but the government seems to think that they are above these standards.
